Why I’d choose Sherlock to be a waterbender: it fits, it really does. Although water is the element of change, to control it properly you must be in control of your emotions. It’s also graceful, and Sherlock is basically a cat in disguise. Also ice just seems to work well for someone as cold and aloof as Sherlock. Also, this would mean that Sherlock and Moriarty would have the same problem with bloodbending. Moriarty is drawn mad by it, and Sherlock could struggle with that as well. Also, blue works better as a color than red. It doesn’t matter much to sherlock, because he’d much rather use his brainpower than bending powers anyday.

Sherlock is a waterbender, Mycroft isn’t. (or if he is, he never uses it.Mycroft is a manipulator of people, not elements.) Sherlock also prefers not to use waterbending when he can use his mind instead.
John was once a Fire Nation soldier who saw the error of his ways, who was wounded when protecting a village in the Earth Kingdom. They miraculously took him in and hid him in the guise of a normal person. He learned to be a doctor and to heal instead of burn.
